What does Christmas mean? For me it means my daughter arriving home from college for a month.
It means busier and happier times at the store, with many customers bearing lists.
It means the start of the Dilys voting - the Dilys award is given by the Independent Mystery Booksellers Association to the book we most enjoyed selling over the past year. Votes are coming in quickly at the moment.
It means a ton of candy, for some reason – today we got ten pounds of Mackinac Island fudge. Anyone who is interested can drop me a line via the store website & I’ll send you a box! There’s no way we can eat it all.
It means visiting with a smaller book club. I was laid up with the stomach flu and every year I ask the club, “Do you really want to come to book club the week before Christmas?” They all say yes and then when it actually rolls around, two or three of them show up instead of the usual dozen.
Since I was sick my husband to take over book club. He fears book club for some reason, but he actually found it enjoyable and since he had already read the book (Sean Chercover’s Big City, Bad Blood) it made it a little easier for him.
Roxie, a steady member of the club, had made everyone adorable bookmarks. I have a pink one – but I am hoping she brings her stash to the next meeting to share with the group.
Since Christmas is on Friday, I’m looking to a very busy day today. This holiday has been lots busier in general than the last one, and that’s a good thing.
And next Friday, our whole family will be together in our pjs sharing gifts and a nice breakfast. That’s a good thing too.
