A big thank you to the bloggers here at Dead Guy for inviting me to officially come to play. I have followed the blog for quite some time. Ben LeRoy has been a very good friend of mine for years. Josh is an agent I love working with. Jeff is writing a series for me. Erin is the bomb! I have enjoyed reading the posts, regardless of my personal connection. So being invited to join is pretty cool.
I thought with my first post I would simply introduce myself. I have always been a reader and a book nerd. One of my first jobs after college was in a small bookstore. Then I moved to Washington DC and worked at Kramerbooks. (I was working there when Ken Starr subpoenaed the stores records to see what books Monica Lewinsky purchased. It was crazy!) When I got too homesick, I came home to Wisconsin and started working in a feminist bookstore in Madison. I also got to know Booked for Murder, the mystery bookstore quite well. Back when I lived in DC, I have moved from reading mostly general fiction to reading mostly crime fiction. I got to know the owner of the store and would occasionally ask him if he wanted to sell. One day he said yes. So my partner and I set forth to buy the store. We had it from 2003 to 2008. We sold the store when we learned we had twins on the way. Since we already had a toddler who went with me to the store every day, adding two infants was just too much. So we sold the store, moved to the Twin Cities, and I stayed home with the boys. I had always thought I would get back into books somehow. One day I was checking publisher websites for openings and I saw that Midnight Ink had an opening for an acquiring editor. I wasn't sure on the editing part, but I felt like I had a pretty good grasp on the crime fiction community, what was selling or not, cover trends, etc. So I applied and here I am now, four and a half years later.
I have increased our list from 15-18 books per year to 34-36. I am lucky enough to attend several conferences a year where I can both network with other editors and agents and meet new writers. I love my job most days! I feel blessed to have an amazing group of authors to work with. I read everyday. And while I miss talking to customers about books, as the acquiring editor, I have something that is even more of a rush. I have the ability to make someone's dream come true - I can offer a debut author a publishing contract. That is a pretty special thing. :)
I look forward to blogging and the opportunity to interact with y'all. Thank you!
