1. It’s April.
2. I seem to have forgotten to have little dependents running around.
3. I am a procrastinator.
One plus two plus 3 equals that I am a mess, and I just realized that I will be a wee bit busy digging into the shoebox underneath that pile of books for my W-2s and various other forms that should have filed in the shoebox in the other stack of books. It’s not like I’m going to be getting a refund, so there is absolutely no incentive for me to file my taxes early. Which means that I will be scrambling at the last minute, like I do every year.
It’s not like Tax Time snuck up on me, as ever since the public libraries and IRS had the brilliant idea of offering tax forms at booklets at the local reference desk, every senior citizen since November has been harassing us for them. Just like how every younger person will be asking for tax extension forms for the next two months. Yes, it’s a generalization. Because it’s true.
Anyhoo, my escape to keep all of my hair from falling out due to stress is to re-read every April this wonderful mystery series by Diane Kelly that features, of all things, an IRS agent. Technically, Tara Holloway is an investigator for the Treasury Department’s Criminal Investigations Division, but it means that she has to go undercover to catch tax frauds and scammers. What is more amazing is that this is an extremely funny mystery series with a delightful female detective. How improbable is it that an IRS agent is the heroine of the novel? Or that she would also be charming, kick-ass, and witty?
Start with the first of this eight-book series. Paying taxes won't get any easier, maybe you won't resent it as much.
