Never let it be said that the libraries aren't willing to jump on the bandwagon and follow a trend! This year, the American Library Association's Collaborative Summer Reading Programs themes are all about the superheroes. So whether you are a baby gumming on a Superman board book, a teen hiding that One Piece manga novel behind your summer school math textbook, or an adult perusing The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay on your Kindle, you need to head to your nearest public library and sign up for a Summer Reading Program! You will be rewarded for doing something you love and would do anyway!
Just because the themes are embracing all things Super-y (and sorry Jeff if you are totally over the whole superhero thing, but I have seen the new Avengers movie twice), you don't need to read a comic book to participate. The Adult Summer Reading Program theme is "Escape the Ordinary," meaning that pretty much anything you read qualifies.
Every library has a different program and start date, so check your local public library to see if it participates; and if it doesn't, ask why not!?! Here at my library we begin May 26 and go through until July 17, and by then the staff will be more than ready for it to end. For the public though, and adults especially, how often do you get prizes and free stuff just for reading! Reading itself is a reward, so nifty pens and latte coupons are just a bonus. Read at least one book a week and win!
