This weekend is Mother’s Day and I am taking this opportunity to thank my mom.
Mom –
Happy Mother’s Day! I hope you have a wonderful weekend – going to the cabin and planting your garden.
I know that I owe where I am today to you. You made sure we did our homework, and that we did it well. Whenever I write the word appreciate I can still hear you spelling it out. Pretty awesome to have a grammar geek for a mom! I am sure many of those term papers and reports earned those A’s as a result of your proofreading and edits. I can hear you asking why I included something and what supporting evidence did I have. Did you know you were honing my critical thinking skills?
I have a terrible memory, but for the life of me, I don’t remember seeing you read novels. I can remember magazines that you would sometimes pick up at the store, but not books. Which is strange - I have always known you were a reader. I must have seen it, or perhaps it was just in our DNA and I simply knew it as fact. You have no idea how cool it is that I bring you a box of books when I come home and later you give me your thoughts on those books. And even cooler that both my sisters are avid readers and you all share books.
Besides the homework, and instilling a love of reading, you allowed us to participate in numerous activities and you came to support us. You raised three daughters, mostly on your own, and in our own ways we have flourished. Your daughters are strong, kind, intelligent, and empathetic women. We love and support each other in amazing ways.
Mom - you did good. Probably because your mom is just as fantastic as you are! Thank you.
Now, let’s hear it for all the wonderful moms out there!
My mother is who inspired me to write. Thanks for all the red monkey stories each night before bed!
