I don't know about you, but I'm in pretty serious need of good books right now. I want immersive, escapist stuff -- I need to get away from the inner and outer tirades, the anxieties, the sadness, the sorrow, the heartbreak, the anger, the stages of grief, the shame for the U.S. in the world, the disgust, and the feelings of utter helplessness.
What I could really use is something from Jasper Fforde, author of several hilarious goofball series. (Serieses? Whatever.) But he hasn't put out a new book for grownups in far too long. (By the way, it cheers me up somewhat to pronounce this author's name incorrectly, with both F's and the final ee, Fuh-Ford-ee.) If you haven't read any Fforde, start with The Eyre Affair, the first book in the Thursday Next series.
If you have read the Fforde books and liked them, and it seems like 2018, the expected release date of 7 Things To Do Before You Die in Talgarth, is a long way away, allow me to recommend two books to tide you over: Daniel O'Malley's The Rook (2012) and Stiletto (2016) .
I'll describe it the way my friend Shanon did: it's an alternate universe kind of thing where there's a secret society of people with really bizarre superpowers, like maybe one person can communicate with all the shrimp of the world, and another person has the ability to carry documents in her stomach, and someone else can turn invisible but only for three seconds, and so on.
Let's all have fun reading in between our bouts of nausea and dread ... right?
There is a new Fford book for adults coming this year. The start of a new series.
