The best detective novel / thriller I've read in months is Underground Airlines by Ben H. Winters. Maybe it's not officially a mystery, not exactly, but it's definitely in that ballpark -- we have a conflicted narrator hunting down a fugitive from "justice," we have spies and double agents, violence, bad guys and badder guys. And it all takes place in an alternate reality where the Civil War never happened and four U.S. states still have legalized slavery.
In the age of lord dampnut, it's a chilling read.
I'm excited to go back and read all the other books by this author, even Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters, which I gave a pass the first time around. I'm also pretty excited to tell my friend Anna about Android Karenina.
